SALVATORE DECANIO, OD, FAAO

A native of South Florida, Dr. DeCanio is a Florida licensed, Board-Certified Optometric Physician and Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. His vast experience and unwavering commitment to professional, attentive eye care excellence has been exemplary and well-noted nationwide.
Dr. DeCanio earned his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The following year, under the direction of noted biochemist Dr. Lawrence Rudel at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, he conducted basic science laboratory research in arteriosclerosis and lipoprotein biochemistry (now well known as LDL and HDL) and compiled inaugural laboratory manuals on these research methods.

Dr DeCanio achieved his Doctor of Optometry(O.D.) degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry in Houston, Texas where he was on the Dean’s Honor List all eight semesters. He then completed an elective one-year residency in hospital-based Optometry and Ocular Disease at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Dr. DeCanio has been involved in many professional publications and book reviews as well as acting as a speaker at numerous nationwide conferences regarding many of the various topics in eye and vision care.

Dr DeCanio is one of the Founding Board Members and remains an active member of the Optometric Council on Refractive Technology (OCRT now the OCCRS) from 2003 – 2018 and during that time was Chairman of its national Annual Meeting. He earned the notable distinction of Fellow – American Academy of Optometry, 1980 – present. He was Founder and co-Chairman of the nationally recognized Palm Beach Winter Seminar for 24 years until 2010.

In October of 2020, Dr. DeCanio is well-pleased to join the Snead Eye Group after 9 years in his own independent practice in Naples, FL. Dr. DeCanio wanted to expand his vision and eye care services for his patients and chose Snead Eye Group as they share his passion for professional attentive eye care excellence and his commitment to advancing technologies and treatments.

Dr. DeCanio has two adult children, a daughter who is in pharmaceutical sales in Denver, CO, and his son who is an Attorney with his own firm in Orlando, FL. His interests also continue to lie in new and emerging medical technologies, total wellness and nutrition, spending time with his family and since a young teenager has been an accomplished competitive golfer.
