09 Jan January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month
January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, an important time to spread the word about this sight-stealing disease. Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness. However, with early detection and treatment, you can often protect your eyes against serious vision loss. Glaucoma is called “the sneak thief of sight” since there are no symptoms and once vision is lost, it’s permanent. As much as 40% of vision can be lost without a person noticing. Sadly, there is no cure for Glaucoma and vision that is lost from Glaucoma cannot be restored. However, early detection can be the key to slowing it’s progression.
One piece of technology used at Snead Eye Group is the Optue iVue Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Test. OCT is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina. With OCT, our doctors can see each of the retina’s distinctive layers and measure their thickness. These measurements help with diagnosis and also provide treatment guidance for Glaucoma and diseases of the retina. This is just one of the ways Snead Eye Group uses the latest cutting-edge technology to provide the very best care for our patients.
